I’m opening this new chapter to separate the history of the cards from all the rest of the new version of MedioEvo Universalis, so I can give you more details... it’s a very important part of the project, and I’m dedicating a lot of time and energy to it.

The back of the cards

Since the cards are going to be made again, with more TECHNOLOGY cards, more EMPIRE cards, a different shape (64x88 mm, like the Magic cards) and other differences, it was worth redoing the back as well…here is a peek of how they could be:

- same background as the last version, but lighter in colour on the upper side

- with the new finished logo with name and intertwined swords

- bigger title on the top in the centre

- with a new standard size (64x88 mm)

- rounded on the corners

If I don’t change my mind from now till the moment when all the “fronts” are ready…I think they’re not bad.
I wanted to put a “II” underneath (for MedioEvo Universalis II), but I think I will decide this detail at the last minute.

Yes, I am interested in somebody who can redraw all the cards, obviously not for free…

Historical investigation

While waiting for a graphic designer to “accept the challenge”, the work is going in this direction:

I read a dozen manuals of other computer games (old ones too), and I wrote some notes that I will then study to see if I can find something useful:

I’m still watching some documentaries on the Middle Ages and taking notes of all aspects: inventions, medicines, weapons, castles, crusades, religion etc…watching these programs as a hobby or for fun is one thing, but watching them and having to concentrate on every single detail because it might be useful…well, it becomes a bit tedious :(

In the end I began writing down a series of changes, remembering that the cards has been “created” 12 years ago, so they only need a little adjustment…I’m not sure about adding others, I have more or less 12 in mind which should make up for what’s missing:

First of all I wanted to compliment myself with you for your excellent work!
I know a graphic designer who live next door to me and might be just what you need. When I see him I will ask him if he is interested, but I can’t promise you anything, as I don’t know what jobs he’s doing at the moment and whether he is at home or at Brescia/Milan, but it’s worth a try :)
We will talk about the matter on Friday evening at the d&d session (by the way, we will be at your house at the usual time, around 8.45 as Paolo has to eat :lol:

As far as the cards are concerned, I’ve almost decided who is going to redo the whole graphics…so now it is time to decide which type of cards I want to change or add.

5 years ago I started playing World of Warcraft and I was fascinated by the way each character was personalized: each class has 71POINTS which can be used in 3 very different SPECIALIZATIONS; each one has a maximum of 76 points and you need 51 to get to the best specialization…there are some combinations that are better than others, but depending on what you want to do in the game it is best to specialize in different ways…if you consider that there are more than 5 million players in Europe, with 5 million different brains…

The idea was to apply the same concept to my TECHNOLOGIES, but I never found the time and the will…now I want to, let’s see if I find the time ;)

I finished collecting my ideas yesterday, and I put them down on this piece of paper:

Now I started to put them in order and I created a scheme to start off:

The main idea created in 1999 remains:
5 SPECIALIZATIONS
24 TECHNOLOGIES
3 MAXIMUM LEVELS

What will change?
5 SPECIALIZATIONS will remain
24 TECHNOLOGIES will probably become 30-32
3 MAXIMUM LEVELS will become 4 (there will be a SPECIAL TECHNOLOGY)

The player can choose a maximum of 24 technologies, but I will make sure he can only have 2-3 level 4 technologies out of the 5 available SPECIALIZATIONS.

How the new technologies are coming along:

The number (32) and the type and scheme have been defined…I’m still not totally satisfied about some things, but I’m waiting for inspiration.

I am not convinced about FEUDALISM and LORDSHIP positioned in this way and the fact that EDUCATION is the starting technology for the yellow and the blue pack.

The maximum number of technologies that a player can buy will be 24…but as they are 32 in total, the players will have to make some decisions and give up something to develop something else; by this weekend I will make the final tests, to see if there are some combinations that are too favourable or that would be chosen more.

Is this what you mean? I don’t agree with GUILD before FEUDALISM.
Or, as we were saying earlier in skype, we can leave them like I said to make FEUDALISM easier and LORDSHIP harder.

Or I could take away MUSIC from the BLUE cards, as it isn’t strictly necessary…
