The first few games...

Messaggio da leggereda Veldriss il 6 giugno 2016, 18:48

The first game: I think we all, my friends and myself included, were waiting for this event for a long time ... since I said "now you I create the right game to play all together" was passed almost one year.
It seems a lot, but it is equally little: I did the race for
- Collect ideas and materials available
- Weave the various types of cards so that none was useless and no indestructible
- Create a map of that size
- Enter all the things you normally find in a management computer
- Balance the all trying to keep the game as possible variable and similarly simple and relatively quick to play.

However it was now done, now it was time to play ... I do not remember what time it was, almost certainly the winter, we had all seems well to me that we were more than 10 (most often during the 1st year we played in this version more than 10).
We found ourselves in the "Chest" house because it was the only place with a giant room ... I did help bring on the 3rd floor the game to play because then the pieces were divided into 4 beautiful boxes full and heavy (shogun 1x, 1x RisiKo Prestige, Serenissima 1x, 1x Anno Domini) over the map (I never weighed, but I know that with a total thickness of 5 mm hard cardboard 8-10 kg did them all).

We prepare the table, we support everything and then start to show the parts of the game ... all that stretched out their hands to try to peek here and there, or open the boxes, but I bacchettavo all: "hands off!" ...
it begins ... suspense ... first map was folded into eight, and had done so for it to open completely in the third step, the second step you could not see anything yet because it was still closed on itself, then when finally open it completely feels a subdued Ooooohhh cool ...;)
... Then it is the turn of the various boxes:
- Armed with 11 colors ... OOOOOOHHH ...
- Goods, ships, ground transportation, coins ... OOOOOOOHHH ...
- Fortifications, banners, barbarian commanders, generals, armies, cathedrals ... OOOOOOOOHHH ...
- Bases and polystyrene panels, technology and trade tables, hundreds of cards ... OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHH ...

I would say that as the start was not bad, it even seemed that the desire to play was increased :D !

We recover a second initial emotion and once captured the attention begins the explanation of the game:
I said, "good morning"
they chorused: "buongiornooooo"
I said, "Congratulations on your excellent choice ..."
"and thanks" :D
... bla... bla bla... bla bla bla... practically, to explain it more initial doubts (remember that none of us had ever played anything so comprehensive / complex if not on the computer) it took me 2 hours  .
Not many, keep in mind that my friends then had 13 to 16 years, were true that most expert players RisiKo and my previous prototype, but if I think about it now might have happened the unexpected: to be a total fiasco! Honestly I had no doubts about the success of the game, reminiscent of mega played in the 80's with the very first version, as the latter could not be created if not a great success?
It had been about 15 years since then, but finally our "game in the drawer" was born.

Phases of the game for each player were not many:
- Roll the dice and see if something random event type, rebellion, barbarians, disasters
- Draws a card from the deck Empire
- Take reinforcements and buy fortifications / technology / media / etc
- trades
- fight
The reinforcements phases / trades / fight were not even, like, very distinct from each other, that there was no defined sequence ... the players had in this way an extremely wide range of strategic options limited only by imagination, the movement capability of the means and its own resources.
This allowed continuous coups, overturning of the situation in the game etc etc ... you never knew what would happen.

This first game was not very fast; all of us, myself included, had to become familiar with the various rules then there ... I particularly wanted that it worked as well as possible, I was also the banker and I did in 4 to deploy reinforcements, removing the losses from the map, pay businesses , read random events and resolve them ... basically I was sweating.

The rules then planned to play fixed partnerships, namely:
- The map was divided into 5 areas of land;
- Any area of land represented more or less a religion (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Shiites, Sunnis) and could have 2 or 3 Empires, it depends;
- Early game with the launch of the dice is sorteggiava the area and the Empire to occupy, maximum 2 players per zone;
- The two players in the same area were Allies

This alliance thing for my friends was WONDERFUL because it opened more game options and strategy:
- I trade and you fight, okay? ;)
- We expect those 4 weaken each other and then we hit behind those who think they have won: twisted:
- I now I weaken him by the escort combat ships, when it's up to you, to bring him all the way from merchant ships, sell all the spices and half to do one of the money
- etc etc etc

The alliance also allowed some possibilities not indifferent:
- The ability to watch the hidden reserves of the ally behind the panel;
- Free exchange a paper empire in turn;
- Speak freely to each other about what to do (even aloof).

Free exchange a paper empire in turn seems at first sight trivial, but allowed to help in some way the ally or confuse opponents.
For example, the Empire card "Papa" makes it immune to the "Bishops" that allow you to steal an opponent Cathedral (cathedrals serve to increase the taxes on their territories and to enhance the dell ' "Heroin" attack).
Once you found out who the "Pope" just a "thief" to steal it and add it to their deck ... but if the player who has the "Pope" that turn "is a paper exchange with the ally ... what will be exchanged? Who will have the "Papa" now?

The same reasoning could apply to all the cards to further increase the effect UNEXPECTED

The rules also included another very important thing: the random rounds !!!
In practice, the sequence of the players the game was not always the same ... that is, I used to play for the third, but every time I finished a full lap I picked up 10 swords (numbered on the blade from 1 to 10) and they fished one by one ... the number determined on the blade turn to play ... you can imagine this as upsetting sometimes the plans of a player who perhaps playing last suffered attacks left and right; or playing for the first "broke her arm" to his sworn enemy.

This idea of random shifts I had taken from Shogun, I liked it a lot and it was a rule made to measure for a game like this.

Another thing I really liked were the rods that could be of two types:
1) the auction for the "sword"
2) the auction for cards / armed / transport / etc etc

1) The first auction was to win the early rounds, let me explain:
the first three swords, rather than draw them, were auctioned to the highest bidder, starting from the first to the third.
If in the first 4-5 rounds this thing absolutely not interested in anyone because all intent to rapidly expand its commercial and military empire, as the game progressed this aspect became decisive and sometimes IMPORTANT !!!
The first auctions almost certainly no one was offering and then all swords were all caught, then someone began to offer 5 gold coins, then 20 ... then the other player who definitely wanted to play before it was offering 50, 100, 200. .. the game was also more and more players forward had gold coins, for which tenders climbed even 1000 gold ONLY to play first ... crazy? no no, beautiful !!!

The auction on the first three swords had a great effect on the game: induced people to trade many players to have more gold coins.

Also allowed some combat tactics such as for example, the most used:
- Expect to play after the victim and his ally
- Declare war and attack him with your ally
- Finished around the turn of the game to buy at auction the first sword
- Declare peace without the enemy could fight back

or:
- I play and ally for first
- I for one declare war and conquered one or more states of the Empire opponent let alone armed 1 per share
- Delete any cards to the opponents to declare war
- My ally plays second and declares peace
- Enemies can not do anything
- Each round there are 5 chances out of 36 (arithmetic mean) that states that I have conquered rebel, making it appear the territory an army of barbarians from 1 to 6 as a general armed
- The barbarians attack my enemies in adjacent territories
- My enemies are trying to solve a small internal rebellion, I can start thinking about another "blow hunchback" :P

2) The auction for cards / armed / transport / etc etc. however, allowed, during your turn, to auction any component of the game that were not placed on the map ... and even here very broad space to ' initiative and imagination of players who invented those things that sometimes really remained stunned ...
Example? we see... mumble mumble...

- Players G1 and G2 allies declare war to another couple, players G3 and G4
- With the thief cards to the enemy spy G1 G3, he steals the thief who uses on G4, the indicator cards and stealing heroin (a very strong attack card)
- G1 now knows the G3 and G4 cards, use 2 spies and eliminates many cards defense
- G1 sacrifices his army to conquer the enemy city of G3 where it has taken refuge from the trading fleet at full load, but fails with heavy losses, take the ships and sells everything ... but no longer has many armed, just a lot of gold coins ...
- Touch play to his ally G2 now, that instead of armies has many ...
- Exchange of paper between the G1 and G2: the heroine is now in the hands of those who are on duty, that is, G2
- Auction: G2 auctions a stupid paper, but its ally G1 bought it with all the gold coins he had just earned by selling the G3 enemy goods
- Always G2 even builds 3 cathedrals with golden coins (over 3000) earned, so as to strengthen the devastating effects of heroin
- G2 can now easily attack and conquer many defenseless territories of G3 and G4 enemies.

The first game he was a bit slow, but each turn there was something new ... even the random events were always eagerly awaited:

- And 'the birthday of the Pope, roll one die ....

- The Pope asks you to accompany the princess ...

- A merchant asks you to exchange your load with a load of ...

- Storm in the Black Sea, roll a die to see if your ships ...

- You are invited to the court of a king, if you donate ...

- Come captured by marauders of the desert ...

etc etc ... 40 cards of this type graced the game a lot, I noticed that I liked a lot (for better or for worse) and rarely happened us to finish them all and having to shuffle the deck.

The first day we played on Saturday, obviously not finished the game ... but we all agreed to continue the day after.
So we found ourselves Sunday right after eating to continue ...

Someone had come from home with the papers with written notes of things to do in the first few rounds of play    You think these guys

We seemed to have all experienced, with some question the result of the evening and night brood, the rounds were much more fluid, it was sent away ... but even Sunday managed to finish the game... NOOOOOOOO

No matter, it continues next Saturday and then on Sunday ... then again the following Saturday and Sunday ... then again ... 5 WEEKEND !!!!!

Great game, just beautiful, the way he liked us.
I honestly do not remember what was the purpose of that time, it seems to me ... but I would not go wrong, I believe it was the conquest of Empires 5 (out of 13) by a pair of allies ... but I'm sorry, I'm not sure, it's been too long.

Unfortunately I have no pictures of that game to show you, but the game overall, it appeared EXACTLY like this:

In these 2 pictures the game is still in its initial state as I had thought of it and created in 1999.
It has not changed, but you want it to 12-13 heads do not pop out the bugs, imbalances or new ideas ???

Instead these are pictures to my parents' house on a Sunday, just before my friends arrive to continue the started Saturday's game:

The bases of the players with their spare resources: armed, gold coins, experience points ...

This player such as after a day of play has already put forth a lot of gold coins and is starting to take some reserve army, as well as experience points for armies.

This player instead it looks like a bad way: no stock of anything, just 5 gold coins ... controls the Islamic Empire, hopefully not even in bad shape on the map :D
