Genesis and assembling from the first ideas until the creation of the prototype

... to the first prototype version

What can we do to make the simple "Risiko" a bit more lively and different?

Surely the our imagination at 14-16 years was big, so we depredated for the first time the pieces of some boardgames to create one all our... in short as liked us.

Initially was pretty simple:
- trading from city to another you earned money to buy armies to combat
- some cards to attack and defence
- there were also random events cards

Below an idea of what it was, 1988 ... Perhaps before:

Some features:
- cities were chosen 1 at a time by players at begining by following the sequence of the game, but instead (starting from last to first).
- The armies were placed in 36 cities.
- The movement had to follow the various maritime and land routes indicated on map
- You could create "roadblocks" on these routes, but everything that was outside of the city were exposed to attack's cards from other players.
- There were no limits about armies, transport units and gold coins.
- Objective of the game, I think to remember, was the conquest of a defined number of cities.

Of course this was only the beginning, the ideas have increased, so much so that I was forced to take a pocket-book to begin to take notes ... I have still it
- at the top a small piece of Scotch yellowed keeps still a piece of table for deploying armies and money, based on the number of players
- bottom left there's my name and then 1°A GEOGRAPHY (Liceo Scientifico)

We look what's inside?

First of all many sheets where rolling ideas, sketches, calculations, tests ... and then process the first tables in our new game, all strictly on check sheets, ruler and pen.
Remember, computers were at the beginning, the PC (8088, 8086, and perhaps already the 286) was very rare, we used the Commodore 64 to play and stop.

Here below: test table zones and calculations for customizable TRANSPORT UNITS

Table AREAS ended

Tables of transport units that can be customized with speed, armed and goods, with their prices to perform upgrades ... This was the latest version of the table, so "latest" that probably we used less than a dozen times.

Some pages are used to mark what players do during the game, how many goods they buy, what kind of transportation they have ...

On other pages there are game saved, the prototype began to be great fun but also very long...

On this page you can see an interesting thing about transport's units: they were no longer "standard" and the same for everyone as initially (1 only ship type, 1 only type of caravan and 1 only horse), but were customizable with "accessories".
If you look at the BLUE player, owns 1 ship called "8 OARS" with the following accessories:
- EXPERTS (ESPERTI): about rowers, gave a bonus on movement
- 10 SAILORS (10 MARINAI): was the number of armies that could transport (in this case very few)
- SAIL (VELA): other bonus movement
- CORVUS: bonus to the attack, we practically had the ability to launch an additional dice to cause losses before main battle between armies on board ships.

If you look at the BLACK player instead, you will see that owns 2 "8 OARS" with under written TOT ... means that these ships were full optional; unfortunately I don't have any table game of that period with detailed description for creation and purchase transport's units, very a pity because I seem to remember it was the system longer used.

As time passed, many components of other boardgames at our disposal were incorporated in this game that we all called Mesciòt (mischiotto, a kind of soup of ideas and rules).
If a game had a beautiful mechanics, we tried to put it... same thing for all kinds of checkers...
We had begun to add fortifications, simple armies (tanks of Risiko) accompanied by special units (miniatures of Shogun), 2 or 3 different trading systems... we tried all, few rules worked immediately, others were changed over time, others had to be abandoned because we didn't like them.
However, cards suffer totally the influence of our imagination :D :D :D
No matter what image they had, if they could satisfy our need it gave also a completely different meaning from the original ... decks of "Risiko", "Risiko più", "Marco Polo" and "Shoguns" were stable now part of our super beautiful deck of 400 cards!!!

Below one of summary tables to list and describe the various features of the cards:

Here below a table for tactical game to follow in the very early turns of the game:
- City to conquest
- initial placement
- positioning reinforcements and attacks to be carried out in the 1st and 2nd turn.

Thanks you VERY MUCH to players "pioneers" (late 1980s early 1990s) with which I spent hundreds of hours playing Mesciòt and rowing at "Canottieri Sbino":

Censi Gianpietro
Coronini Sergio
Donatelli Roberto
Iannone Nicola (me stesso)
Lumina Claudio
Macario Roberto
Pegurri Gianpaolo
Tarzia Massimo
Tarzia Stefano

P.S. all the material to play this version is still in good condition, carefully guarded in plastic bags ... we do a game?
